Yeti Unfall und ein kurze Hintergrund

It was a very sad incident that took place during the time of greatest festivals and a peak tourist season in Nepal.

The initial reports are indicating that the bad weather was a cause of the incident because visibility was zero at the time whereas the required visibility is 5000 (According to Kantipur). Lukla is said to be the most difficult airport in the world. The temperate mountainous reason in Nepal are mostly covered with the fog in late morning or in the afternoon that’s why most of the flight to mountainous reasons take place early in the morning (or before 10 am).

Thanks to the experienced pilots in Nepal that they cope with the environmental conditions and land the flights even in the difficult weather without instrumental help but by the virtue of there 5 or 6 senses. You can see the following and similar videos in You tube how difficult it is in Lukla:

The question is why Yeti because this is not the first accident but Yeti Airlines was facing frequent minor and major accidents in past few years in Nepal. Aircrafts are good, no doubt.

Few years before one Yeti airline flight skipped of the airport in Surkhet in western Nepal. Almost during same time another Yeti flight skipped the airport during take off in Jumla (21 June 2006). One of the major conclusions of the probe to investigate that incident was carelessness or the mental pressure of the crew and also lack of the coordination. Other minor incidents were also frequent with this Airline.

Pilots of the Yeti Airlines said that they were forced to fly many times and even in the bad weather. They had no option but either loose the job or fly. The boss of the airlines (who once was himself a trekking guide) used to present in the airport and pressurize the crew (direct or indirect pressure). Yeti has covered many destinations in Nepal and limited aircraft and crew so no doubt the crews have more pressure. When unprofessional boss tries to influence the technical and management staff no doubt they should work in mental stress. In my own perception I was always afraid that such situation could invite any unfortunate moment.

Probably that was the reason American Embassy in Nepal few years ago had directed its staffs not to use Yeti Airlines. But on the other hand the Yeti has more available flights and tickets than others!

Just three days before I had read that the Minister of Civil Aviation of Nepal had visited the concerned offices and directed to strictly follow the security measurements. Many pilots told unanimously that they have a lot of mental pressure and sometimes extra load.

Though no body knows the real cause of this accident till now, we just pray such things not to repeat in future. May the soul of the deceased victims live in eternal peace.
