CPN-Maoists supremo Prachanda firm on promoting tourism


The office bearers of Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) had an
interaction with the leaders of CPN-Maoists on July 10, 2006 and
apprised them various problems faced by the hotel industry.

In an interaction, Puspa Kamal Dahal a.k.a Prachanda, chairman of
CPN-Maoists, politburo member Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai and other senior
leaders and office bearers of HAN and its past presidents discussed
various issues related to Nepalese tourism. In a press release
issued by HAN after the interaction, it was said that Prachanda
underlined the need of promoting tourism to boost country's economy.
Referring to the need to exploit huge tourism potential, Prachanda
further said that the tourism industry should be promoted to uplift
the living standard of people.

Another Maoists leader Dr Bhattarai reiterated the party's policy of
not harming any tourists and tourism related activities. He reminded
that not a single tourist was physically harmed even during the
strikes, war or Nepal bandha.
"We are firm on our policy to promote tourism as a vital tool for a
rapid economic development. Our party will continue to promote
tourism as a top priority sector for overall economic development and

HAN president Prakash Shrestha apprised them the deteriorating
situation of tourism industry over the last eight years. He further
said that increasing trade unionism has caused problem to the hotel
management. "Extortion has not yet stopped despite party's
assurance," he added.
