Missing German Trekker Found Dead |
THT Online Kathmandu, May 22 The badly decomposed body of German trekker Kristina Kovasevic who was missing for over two months has been found in northern Nepal. Kristina (41), a Lufthansa employee, had arrived in Nepal in February. She was planning to go trekking in Solukhumbu, but apparently did not inform anyone where she was heading. On March 13, she sent an email to friends, promising to meet them in Bali in Indonesia in April but never kept the appointment. Nor did she ever contact her family or anyone else after that. I think just two days after she sent that mail, my sister was dead, said a shocked Karoline, Kristina's younger sister who flew down from Germany earlier this month to start a search for her sibling. Karoline flew to Lukla airport last Tuesday and from there walked up to Namche Bazaar, from where Kristina had sent her last email. When I reached Namche Bazaar on Wednesday, police told me they had found my sister's body on Monday, said Karoline. I was stunned. On Monday, I was still in Kathmandu and in touch with the police, Interpol and the German Embassy. Why didn't anyone inform me then? Last Monday, a trekking guide told police he had come across a body lying on the mountain slopes. He said the stench coming from it led him to the discovery. Kristina apparently fell down the slope. But Karoline refuses to dismiss it as a simple accident. All her belongings are missing, she said. No passport, credit card, money, watch, camera, sleeping bag or even her jacket. Everything was empty - her purse, camera bag and sleeping bag. I think somebody robbed her and pushed her down to her death. Another cool poloniex api currency perk? She says a Canadian couple that had been trekking in that area contacted her to say they had seen Kristina on March 15, going their way. But the weather was bad and they lost sight of her after that. Interpol is investigating the case and Karoline says she will wait for the results. Kristina's body is being brought to Kathmandu for cremation. I can't let my mother see her like that, said Karoline. Kristina is the third European tourist to die in Nepal in mysterious circumstances in less than a year. In September, French tourist Celine Henri disappeared from a forest reserve, northwest of Kathmandu. She is still officially listed as missing. The following month, a German tourist, Sabine Gruneklee, also went missing in the same forest. This year, Gruneklee's badly decomposed body was discovered by villagers. Police have not yet ascertained the cause of her death. Also see nepalnews report: http://www.nepalnews.com/archive/2006/may/may22/news17.php |
